The Institute for Religious Understanding and Sustainable Peacebuilding (IRUSP) is an independent interdisciplinary research institute based in Maryland, USA. We are committed to advancing religious understanding, interfaith engagement, social justice, and sustainable peacebuilding through rigorous research, education, policy engagement, and community collaboration.

IRUSP was established in response to growing global concerns surrounding religious extremism, social polarization, violent conflict, inequality, migration, digital misinformation, and the urgent need for constructive dialogue across religious and cultural boundaries.

The Institute serves as a platform for scholars, policymakers, faith leaders, civil society organizations, and community stakeholders to engage critical issues shaping religion and human society in the contemporary world. Driven by academic rigor, ethical responsibility, and community-centered engagement, IRUSP seeks to become a globally respected center for innovative scholarship and transformative peacebuilding initiatives.

Dr. Ojo Joseph Rapheal is a Nigerian-born scholar, researcher, educator, public intellectual, and interdisciplinary thinker whose academic and professional engagements span Africa and the United States. With over twelve years of teaching, research, mentoring, and community engagement experience, he has distinguished himself within the fields of Comparative Religious Studies, Religion and Politics, African Christianity, migration studies, interfaith relations, spirituality, and religion in the public sphere.

In furtherance of his global theological training, Dr. Rapheal is currently completing the Certificate Program in Lived Theology and World Christianity at Princeton Theological Seminary, New Jersey, USA (expected August 2026). This formation reflects a robust engagement with religion as both an intellectual discipline and a lived social reality, while integrating leadership, administration, and societal development perspectives.

Dr. Rapheal’s scholarly contributions have earned him international recognition through fellowships, travel grants, conference presentations, and research collaborations across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and North America. He has presented papers at major global gatherings hosted by institutions including Harvard Divinity School, Princeton Theological Seminary, the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, and the International Association for the History of Religions.

Originally from Nigeria, his intellectual and professional journey across multiple territories continues to shape his worldview and commitment to fostering global understanding, human dignity, and peaceful coexistence through rigorous research and practical engagement. Beyond academia, he remains deeply involved in faith-based leadership, youth mentorship, and community development — combining scholarship with practical spirituality and public service.
